Created In God's Image

Happy May!
This month, help support our efforts to contend for the freedom to proclaim the faith.

What does it mean that Adam was created in God's image? Surely this includes righteousness, as well as the ability to be in conversation with God. But then, the same could be said of angels, who are not said to bear that image. This image also looks forward to God's eternal intention to become one of us in His eternal Son, who is the express image of God.

But more may be said. The Triune God is one, and yet there are three persons. In our humanity, there is likewise a kind of unity that runs deeper than that of the angels, individually created. God created Man in His own image; male and female He created them. Eve is not from Venus, but from Adam's side. Likewise, children proceed from this union, and a family is one, hinting at things higher still. In the Trinity, there is order—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. So also in the family—husband and wife, father, mother, and children. But the man is not greater than the woman. Man is the head, but woman his glory, and children proceed from this mysterious union, which has its analog in Christ and His bride, the Church.

Indeed, in our humanity, we are made for one another. Angels may be friends, bound in the unity of thought and love, but our unity runs deeper. Bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh deeper. A child proceeds and is yet united. Now, all this is by way of analogy, but it is hard not to notice. Adam created in the image of God cannot be alone any more than the Father is ever alone, nor does the Spirit, who proceeds from the Father and the Son and through the Son, is ever working alone.

The great mystery of the faith comes at the cross, when Christ incarnate is forsaken that we might be embraced. In one sense, the Father can never forsake His Son, for they are eternally one, and yet the Father must sacrifice His Son, the Son at once knowing, in agreement, but also facing the wrath of the God who loves Him eternally. All this so that we might be one with God, even as God is one.

And so it is, in the heavenly places, unity is restored according to the greatest reality of the Triune God. By the redemption of Christ and in the power of the Spirit, we are brought into communion with the God who loves us. We pray to the Father, through the Son, and in the Holy Spirit, and as a church, we do so as one. Our restored and elevated unity in God's image, in Christ's incarnation, death and resurrection is one at which the angels marvel and rejoice.

So, put away foolish ideas of becoming an angel upon death. Ours is a glory unto itself, a glory of creation restored by the God who created us male and female, by the God who brought us children to life through that one flesh union, and who brought us into His family through His Son. And so we may say that God in His essence is love, and into that love that consists of unity and persons, we are taken up. And so we say that the image of God is a mystery revealed, and yet still unfolding with every birth and every birth from on high.

Be Encouraged
“As Christians, we know that God’s commitment to upholding life started long ago—before photos—before the beginning of time even. From His ordered creation of the world to His ordered creation of you in your mother’s womb, God’s work has always been life-affirming. Grafted into His family through Baptism, we have become children of God and inheritors of eternal life.” –Michelle Bauman, Y4Life
