Beware the Lemmings

This February, we’d love if you would renew your prayers and support for the Lutheran Center for Religious Liberty’s efforts to contend for the freedom to proclaim the faith.

Social media today functions much like the volatile crowds Gustave Le Bon described over a century ago when he observed, “Crowds are only capable of thinking in images, and are only to be impressed by images. It is by images alone that great leaders can be followed.” In the digital world, people aren’t working through truth with patience and reason; they’re reacting to symbols, slogans, memes, and bite-sized videos that bypass the mind and stir the gut and emotions.

Social media influencers and political ideologues don’t persuade with sound arguments; they shape public mood through spectacle and endless repetition. Algorithms reward what’s loud and emotional, not what’s wise or true. Just like the crowds of old, individuals are easily absorbed into the mob—swayed, deceived, and rarely aware of it.

That’s why Scripture warns us not to be like lemmings—mindless proles—tossed to and fro by every new doctrine or ideological trend, but to remain sober-minded, alert, and grounded in the logic of the Divine Logos—Christ Himself, the Word made flesh, the Truth who does not manipulate, but grants clarity and saves.

You, who have ears, hear; you, who have eyes, see.

Be Encouraged
“God loves you in your vulnerability so much that He subjected Himself to conform to a vulnerable human body. So today … remember that Jesus, in whom all things hold together, loves you, individually. He is fully present with you just as He was in His mother’s arms. God’s peace be with you this day, this night.” –Andrea Delwiche
