THE ONLY SOURCE FOR ABUNDANT LIFE!

WORD FROM THE CENTER:
MONDAY, APRIL 27,  2026
Welcome to “Word from The Center” MONDAY, a devotional word from the Center of our faith, Jesus Christ, with reflections on His Word. I’m Gregory Seltz. Today’s verse is John 10:10, where Jesus says,

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

THE ONLY SOURCE FOR ABUNDANT LIFE!

Human beings have incredibly short memories, even about things that really matter. Do you remember just a few years ago when we were worried about whether our world would survive the pandemic? (It isn’t that long ago, really, it isn’t.) Do you remember the amount of control political bureaucrats began to exercise, claiming authority over virtually every aspect of our lives?

Looking back, it’s hard to realize that they got so many things wrong. But that didn’t stop them from exerting control over us. I don’t think there was ever a time when so many people chimed in to tell us how and why we should do this or that. Remember their phrases such as, “Social distance,” “Wear a mask,” and “Look to government to make all the right decisions.” Their mantra? We’re doing all this “FOR YOU.” We want you to have “life.” Right.

In response, some challenged those mandates by asserting, “No matter the severity, we must look to God and to each other,” and then move forward. Such notions were not merely dismissed; they were often punished severely.

Today, we’re still all trying to get back to living a normal life, and even to live life abundantly. Well, in our reading for today, Jesus has a very clear perspective on living life “to the full.” Whether in the middle of chaos or in abundance, Jesus includes all of us when he says, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

Wow, what an incredible statement! You can have your health, you can have incredible wealth, and you can have the cumulative wisdom of the world today with access to the most sophisticated technologies ever, but if you don’t have Christ, you are missing out on life. Said another way, if Jesus Christ is your Savior, there is abundant, eternal life for you in Him, even in the midst of struggle, chaos, pandemics, war, suffering, and pain. In fact, He is the only source of eternal, abundant life. Everything else and everyone else will leave us wanting in the end if we put our ultimate trust in them.

Jesus warns us to that effect. He’s telling us not to try to go it alone (as if we could), and not to look to anything in this world besides Him for the kind of life that lasts. Jesus has to remind us of this again and again because we so easily become over-confident in ourselves.

If 9/11, COVID-19, bank failures, wars and rumors of wars have taught us anything, they should have reminded us again and again how fragile this sinful life is, and how easily the things of this world can become broken. There are “thieves” all over the place seeking to steal from us what only God can give. Satan, the fallen world, and even our own sinful flesh are constantly trying to convince us that the source of enduring life is anywhere other than in Jesus. Don’t let them fool you! Don’t let anything or anyone steal your heart and your soul away from the living God. Don’t let anyone steal the abundant life that Jesus wants you to have in Him.

Many of us today are really worried about protecting our physical health and our material wealth too. There’s nothing wrong with that. But don’t focus too much on those so that you leave the door of your soul unlocked or, worse, wide open for the thieves of this world. Your spiritual life and eternal health are meant to be rooted in the person and work of “God in the flesh,” Jesus Christ. He lived, died, and rose again so that you can have abundant, eternal life IN HIM. If you are looking anywhere else for the fullness of life, you are looking in the wrong place!

Jesus tells it like it is in our verse for today. In the midst of whatever crisis you are facing at the moment and, yes, EVEN IN THE FACE OF DEATH, there is a way to life through repentance and faith in Him for you. It’s not a bargain; it’s not a sleight of hand. Jesus earned the right to say this to you and me when He died our death and rose again to give us His life. Don’t let anyone tell you that there is anything in heaven or on earth greater than His offer of life and salvation. Thieves, robbers, OR Jesus Christ? When it comes to abundance, eternal security, and the power to live life fully now and forever, there’s only one source. In the midst of everything else, put your trust in HIM ALONE.

PRAYER – Dear Lord Jesus, give me the spiritual insight that comes from faith in You. Remind me daily that everything this world can provide is nothing compared to the abundant life that comes from knowing and trusting in You alone. AMEN
