IN CHRIST….NEVER ALONE!

WORD FROM THE CENTER:
MONDAY, JUNE 8, 2026
Welcome to “Word from The Center” MONDAY, a devotional word from the Center of our faith, Jesus Christ, with reflections on His Word. I’m Gregory Seltz. Today’s verses are Matthew 28:18-20, where Jesus says,

18 “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

IN CHRIST….NEVER ALONE!

Today I want return to the Gospel lesson read in many churches last Sunday. It is a familiar one. These final words from the final chapter of Matthew’s Gospel are power-packed verses! The commission to “go and make disciples of all nations” speaks to the enduring purpose of God’s people in this world, for the sake of the world. Jesus then makes an incredible promise to believers as we go about being His people for others, for our families, our friends, and literally to anyone whom God brings into our lives. He declares, “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Wow! Believers in Christ are NEVER ALONE! We live in a world seeking real friendships and yearning for meaningful, enduring relationships, but where many people are drowning in heartbreaking loneliness. Jesus himself enters into that mix as our enduring friend, our ever-present Lord and Savior. In Him we are never alone, even we when feel that kind of loneliness.

Do you remember the Home Alone movies? I really liked them, especially the original and then Home Alone 2, subtitled, “Lost in New York.” The movies are about this little boy who always seems to get left behind when his family goes on a vacation. The family makes it to their destination, but he somehow gets left behind, left to fend for himself on his own. But when you get right down to it, the point of the movies is that he’s never really alone. In the midst of his ordeal, he still has the love of his family and the family’s resources at his disposal. He puts all that to work to deal with whatever seems to come against him. Even when totally by himself, he wasn’t really “home alone.”

Sometimes I think that we Christians forget that IN CHRIST we are never alone. Sometimes we feel alone, especially when things aren’t going how we hoped they would. Then it might seem that God has left us to our own devices. That feeling might also come because we’ve wandered from Him and gone our own way, as if we could make it on our own. Today’s lesson calls us to dismiss that erroneous notion and to repent of it. The Bible teaches that all human beings live, move, and have our very being from God because we are created in His image and he sustains all life (Genesis 1:26-27; Psalm 104:27-20; Acts 17:26-28).

However, our rebellion, sin, and attempts to go our own way make us like the “home alone” character. He tries to buy food without His dad’s credit cards, with only the little money in his pocket. What if he had to sleep in a house which he had to provide ON HIS OWN TERMS, AS IF HE COULD? Can you say, “Homeless alone?” Imagine if he had to protect himself with only the wits and strength of a 10-year-old in New York City or Chicago? Yikes! If that were the case, the movies would have had a very different ending than they do. Fortunately, the young lad comes to realize that through it all, in spite of his apparent abandonment, foolishness and childishness, he had and eventually became thankful for the love of his parents, as well as their provision and their blessing.

Jesus gets even more personal with us today. Maybe you are without the resources of loving parents, like our “Home Alone” star. Maybe you do feel all by yourself and truly on your own, while yearning for more. Especially then, Jesus calls you to the exciting adventure of living life with Him and as His people for others. No matter how things might be going in your life at the moment, when you hear His Word, you receive His love, forgiveness, life, and salvation. Faith in Him brings joy even amidst sadness and peace in the middle of trials. He locates Himself with us through His Word and Sacraments so that you and I can always find Him with blessings to be received and resources to be shared. Wow!

In view of all of that, Jesus reminds all who believe in Him of this: “I am with you always.” You are never, ever alone when you belong to Him. Get it? This isn’t the mushy ending of a holiday movie. It is so much more. It is the reality that no matter what happens, there is One who will never let you down, who will never leave you to your own devices. Jesus will always be there for you with His wisdom in the Bible, with His presence through the Word and Sacraments, and with the empowering Holy Spirit who will encourage, comfort, and strengthen you to live boldly, now and forever. Home alone? No, never alone, and always at home with Jesus Christ who died for you, lives with you, and even lives in you until He brings us home to see Him face to face.

PRAYER – Dear Lord Jesus, there are times when I do feel overwhelmed by the loneliness that seems to be plaguing our world at the moment. Give me courage to look to You especially then, and to receive Your gifts in Word and Sacrament. May they enable me to deal with such things and also empower me to live boldly for You. Help me to realize that since You are with me, I am never, ever on my own. With Your constant care and loving presence, open me up to see the possibilities of friendships and caring camaraderie that You want for my life. Strengthen my faith until I see you face to face for all eternity. AMEN
